I'm in the education program and for my introductory semester I was in AC High School and the junior class I was observing was reading this play. The teacher did the play in the old fashion way (each person took a role and read aloud their part) but none of the students grasped the concepts in the play nor seemed interested in it. I remember reading this play my sophomore year of high school and doing a ton a pre-research into the Salem witch trials and witchcraft prior to reading it so we became interested in the subject. It was one of those moments where I realized that in my future teaching career I need to make students excited about the material, I don't think it's hard to become interested in witchcraft, it's different and fascinating. I was actually surprised to still find out this play was still used in the curriculum today.
It is almost as if this is today's form of blackmail and gossip, except much worse! Anyone could say anything about anyone and it was instantly believed because other people would join the bandwagon and talk badly of someone. Its so sad to think that so many innocents were lost and even resorted to death because they were afraid that someone would say something about them that would maybe turn into them being a "witch". It sickens me that this was the world we lived in. And in all honesty, it still isn't much better today. Now instead of talking about people being witches, we talk about their race and whether they are terrorists. Its just sad.
