CONTEST * CONTEST * CONTEST

HI,

So, here it is:

Why use the name "Ouija" for the gameboard?  Why draw the eye on the center of the board?

In other words: Where did the word "Ouija" come from and what did it mean?

And, why draw the eye?

Good Luck!!

  1. The word Ouija supposedly comes from an Egyptian word meaning "good luck." The inventor of the board Charles Kennard gave it the name due to his claim that the spirits of the board spelled it out. An eye is used because it serves as a a communication tool for spirits. It moves when the spirit wants to convey a message.

  2. I'm not sure if one person was supposed to answer this or what the parameters of "blog presence" in the syllabus are so I am answering this question as well. I found my answer on this website:http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-strange-and-mysterious-history-of-the-ouija-board-5860627/?no-ist.

This article says that no one truly knows where the Ouija board came from, but news about the board first came from spiritualist camps in Ohio. They called it the "talking board." Charles Kennard decided to patent this board. The sister of one of the men Kennard worked with, named Helen Peters came up with the name when she asked the board. It spelled out "Ouija" so she asked what that word meant and the board responded with "good luck." There is also skepticism that the name came from a locket Helen was wearing of a woman named "Ouida."
I could not find anything about drawing an eye at the center of the board but my assumption would be that it represents the third eye and allows us to connect with the spirit world more easily.
