Assignment Guidance
Reaction Paper: There
has got to be something in this class that gets
your gears grinding. This assignment is designed to encourage you to sort out your thoughts and how to support them in writing:
- Establish your thesis. Explain what you are writing about and why in our opening sentence(s).
- Give a summary discussion about the topic; expect that the reader needs to know the basics about the situation, the context, its history, the theories that support it, etc.
- Discuss. Write this section with all the fire that catalyzed your interest in the first place. If it helps, write this as though you were writing an email to a good friend and then go back over the paper and adjust it to an academic paper. This way I can really hear your voice.
- Wind it down with another summary, this one including the new information and a re-support of your original position.
- Write a nice, satisfying closing statement.
Some fundamental components
of your Spell to help shape it:
Phase of the moon
Day of the Week
Ruling Hour, Ruling Planet
Herbs
Day(s)/Night(s) of Spell
Intention
Colors, Symbols
Appropriate gods
Tools, Altar Plan
Chant(s)/Rhyme(s)
1. Introduce the intention of the spell. (This acts as your thesis statement)
2. Discuss what motivated your choice for this spell. This can be anything at all from "i'm currently suffering from a broken heart" to "(you) saw something on the internet that seemed simple enough to do in one night."
3. Examine briefly your motivation(s) and determine what higher purpose, if any, it serves.
4. Begin writing out the step by step process of the spell, explaining at each step what you are choosing (a tool, a time of day, etc) and why you chose it.
5. Yes, go ahead and put in pictures, props, ribbons, anything at all. Go for it. Make a great spell.
6. Bind it all together in a thoughtful cover. The final product should look like a Book of Shadows, but online.
Artistic Project: Express learning through a creative medium. For example, write and record a song about the Witches' Holocaust.
